AEO
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of making sure AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity recommend your brand in their answers - not just rank a link. Here's what it is, why it matters, and how it differs from traditional search.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand named and recommended inside the answers that AI assistants generate. When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity which product to buy, which provider to trust, or which brand is best for a given need, AEO is what determines whether your name shows up in the response.
It is sometimes called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Either way, the shift is the same: buyers increasingly get a single synthesized answer instead of a page of links, and that answer is the new shortlist.
Why answer engines changed the game
For two decades, discovery meant ranking. A search engine returned ten blue links, and the goal was to be near the top so a person would click through to your site.
Answer engines collapse that. The assistant reads across many sources, decides what is true and relevant, and writes a recommendation in its own words. The user often never sees a list of links at all - they see a paragraph that names a few brands and explains why.
That has two consequences:
- Being mentioned matters more than being clicked. If the AI recommends three brands and you are not one of them, you were effectively invisible for that query.
- The answer is opaque. You cannot see "your position" the way you could in a ranked list. You have to actually ask the question and read what the AI says.
How AEO differs from traditional search
It is tempting to treat AEO as a rebrand of search optimization. It is not. The mechanics are different in a few important ways.
The output is a recommendation, not a ranking
A ranked list is deterministic and visible. An AI answer is generated, phrased differently each time, and can name competitors, hedge, or leave you out entirely. You are optimizing for inclusion and sentiment in prose, not a numeric rank.
The engines are few and specific
Today the assistants that meaningfully shape brand discovery are ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Each grounds its answers differently - some lean heavily on live citations, others on what they have learned - so the same query can produce different recommendations on each one.
Citations are the evidence layer
Answer engines frequently cite the sources they drew on. The domains an assistant trusts for your category - review sites, industry publications, your own documentation - directly influence who gets recommended. Owning and earning those citations is core AEO work.
What AEO work actually looks like
Good AEO is measurement-led. You cannot improve what you cannot see, and AI answers are invisible until you go and ask. A practical loop looks like this:
- Measure. Run realistic, buyer-intent prompts against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity and capture how - and whether - your brand appears.
- Benchmark. Compare your presence against the competitors the AI names alongside you, query by query.
- Own your citations. Find where you are recommended but not cited, and which third-party domains feed the answers.
- Act. Prioritise the changes - to your content, your structured data, your presence on trusted sources - most likely to move the answer.
- Prove it. Connect AI visibility to the referral traffic and conversions those assistants actually send you.
The takeaway
AEO is not a coat of paint on old search tactics. It is a response to a real change in how people discover and choose brands: the answer is the destination now. Brands that measure how AI assistants describe them - and treat that as a managed surface rather than a black box - will be the ones the next buyer hears recommended.
